MEDICAL SERVICES PLAN (MSP)
The Welfare Plan will no longer administer provincial medical coverage for members and their families as of January 1, 2025. To report any changes to your MSP coverage, please contact Health Insurance BC directly.
Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums were eliminated January 1, 2020 but MSP remains mandatory for all British Columbia residents and for eligibility for coverage under the Welfare Plan.
- Members must register for MSP with Health Insurance BC (HIBC) as an individual by registering for MSP through the gov.bc.ca/managingyourMSPaccount website.
- Any changes to coverage, including address changes, name changes, etc should also be done through this website.
Frequently Asked Questions
A The Province of British Columbia used to fund provincial health care by way of MSP premiums. However, since January 1, 2020, the province no longer requires premiums for funding and instead implemented a payroll tax, which is similar to other provinces in Canada. Requiring the MSP enrollment form and performing the administration is more of a burden for our plan members as it often holds up the enrollment process if the MSP form is not completed properly. It also adds no value to our plan members when they can report any coverage changes directly to Health Insurance BC.
